Over the road from Hampton Court’s ornate lion topped gates, this Grade II-listed super-smart hotel is set back from the rolling banks of the River Thames to do discrete-chic like no one else. With 36 rooms to choose from (created interior’s guru Nicola Harding) it’s intensely romantic and the perfect bolthole if you want privacy and sophistication with a modern-cool touch. Food is high on the agenda here with two main restaurants: 1665 Riverside Brasserie – the stunning Riverside Brasserie and terrace with a majestic centrepiece bar, wine room, open kitchen, and beautiful alfresco terrace overlooking the Thames and The Boathouse – a relaxed riverside cafe and wine bar, a vibrant, stylish and relaxed place to host your events.
With a clear culinary vision, they’re all about organically sourced local produce and generous hospitality. But for the ultimate in alfresco fun we suggest poodling down to the Whispering Angel Terrace which comes with a private jetty and its own riverboat.
With their six new self-drive boats, each named after one of Henry VIII’s wives, you can also skipper direct from the Lion Terrace. These electric boats are easy to drive and take up to seven people, with seating and a central table that’s just perfect for a Mitre picnic or a bottle or two of champagne. There’s no better way to enjoy life on London’s famous river, and when skippers get back, a glass of rosé will absolutely be waiting upon the sun-soaked riverside terrace.
Did we mention well behaved Dogs are welcome too? There really isn’t a more enchanting place to sleep by the river.
For another dining experience, a couple doors down to The Mitre you will find Coppernose Cafe. Open daily, The Coppernose Cafe is a delightful neighbourhood cafe overlooking Hampton Court Palace where scrumptious breakfasts, lunches, pastries and cakes can be enjoyed.
For a wedding venue, it’s also a total show-stopper: this trendy boutique hotel on the banks of the Thames has its very own mooring, meaning you and your partner could impress on your wedding day by arriving by boat. The leafy light-flooded orangery (seating 24 – 60) is a stunningly designed space created to reflect a quintessential Henley Regatta boathouse. Clad with terracotta walls and dramatic colours, there’s also a fabulous private terrace for a lively al fresco drinks reception. Food and drink are the heartbeat of the hotel; as a little added extra, newlyweds can enjoy a complimentary first anniversary dinner and stay as part of their wedding package. Also, this summer, the Whispering Angel terrace is back and joined by the Lion’s Terrace.
When it comes to rooms its Nicola Harding’s playful wicker-clad spaces with a Tiki edge, deliciously seasonal menu and a basically-in-London postcode, The Mitre is a handsome prospect. More handsome still is its Henry VIII Suite – a scalloped, velvety ode to the rambunctious Tudor King). Couples can cosy up in a poster bed enrobed in thick, blue curtains, play cards on the lacquered coffee table or sink into the standalone copper bath, with sweeping views over the Thames and Hampton Court.
