As the start of wedding season began, the industry’s Instagram feeds became filled with pictures of beautiful tablescapes punctuated with spectacular floral arrangements crediting one brand – FLOWERBX. The Wedding Edition caught up with fashion’s Queen of Flowers, founder and CEO, Whitney Bromberg Hawkings on her guide to ensuring fabulous party flowers for your big day.
Whitney Bromberg Hawkings is the founder and CEO of FLOWERBX; the world’s premier online flower delivery service and global authority on living life beautifully. FLOWERBX offers high-quality, cut-to-order seasonal stems in single-variety bunches, celebrating the very best flowers throughout each and every month of the year.
At what point in the wedding planning process should the flowers be considered by a couple?
I believe that a beautiful wedding set-up must be cohesive with thought in every corner, which is why wedding flowers should be considered at the very beginning of the process; helping form the overall mood throughout your celebrations. I always share my three top tips with brides (and grooms!) on initial appointment; choose flowers that reflect your everyday aesthetic, make them timeless and avoid tapping into trends, and – most importantly – work with the seasons, as these are the flowers that will be at their most beautiful for your big day.
How would you describe your ‘wedding style’ at FLOWERBX?
Our style of wedding flowers is much like that of any other stem you will find at FLOWERBX. First and foremost, our flowers are always seasonal; to guarantee not only the most bountiful of florals, but to encourage choices full of fragrance that will evoke memories for years to come. Our flowers are always cut to order, making them a more Earth-friendly option, and ensuring that each stem is hand-selected for its own unique beauty. Our signature style is single variety bunches and arrangements, but this does not have to mean you must stick to just one type of flower. We love to create layered table displays with bud vases filled with stems of different tones, heights, and textures, as well as large installations and urn arrangements. Our team loves a challenge!
The biggest floristry wedding trend right now is..
At FLOWERBX, we are more about timeless, beautiful flowers, rather than following floral trends. When you choose stems that have been grown with love, at the right time of year as intended by nature, those will always be the best.
What is your favourite colour scheme for a wedding this summer?
For me, I love tonal arrangements that feel like they will stand the test of time. Wedding flowers that focus on palettes of ivory or pinks often best epitomise the air of romance associated with the celebrations, and don’t date as quickly as some more trend-led aesthetics.
What is your biggest no-no when it comes to floral arrangements?
My biggest pet hate when it comes to wedding arrangements is not thinking through the logistics of the day when planning your flowers. Never place tall displays on tabletops; there is nothing worse than not being able to see the diner opposite you! Instead, use these larger displays to frame key areas, like urn arrangements in your entranceway, along the aisle at your ceremony, and to add a floral touch to staircases. Slightly larger vases, like our Royal Windsor Vase, can be used alongside bud vases to create extra height, without blocking the view.
What are your favourite flowers to use for a statement centrepiece?
At FLOWERBX, statement flowers don’t have to be one huge showstopper vase. In fact, we think there are various ways to create impact, even with fewer flowers. These can be bud vases filled with individual stems, or larger arrangements in single-variety bunches. When it comes to my favourite flowers to create this look, it’s all in the seasons.
Can a bride be bold with her bouquet and make a chic statement?
Of course! My advice to brides is to have fun with flowers. We all have our favourites for both aesthetic and emotive reasons, so the most important thing is to choose flowers that you love, that reflect you and your day.
What is your favourite flower?
Choosing a favourite flower is near enough impossible for me, as every season brings with it a new dose of floral excitement; whether that’s the arrival of fringed tulips in spring, the anticipation for peony’s fleeting season in May, or jewel-toned hydrangeas in the autumn. One of my favourite things about flowers is that there is joy to be found in every moment of the calendar, which is why I always encourage brides to work with the flowers that are in season on their wedding date, not against them.
