There is so much fun to be had when setting the table for a bridal celebration – especially a hen do – but it can be easy for things to look cluttered or over the top. Our lifestyle editor, Alexandra Dudley, shares her top tips on how to create the perfect hen-do brunch table.
Think About Layers
A helpful rule of thumb is to think about layers. Focus on layers of colour and layers of height. Subtle hues always work well as a base – like pale pink and green linens. Not only do they look charming, but they’ll also ensure that your china really pops!
White china is a clean, timeless choice for a bridal celebration and shines beautifully when layered onto subtle pastel linens. The Gio Gold collection from Wedgwood is one option that stands out. A Wedgwood classic, this fine-bone range of china has a stunning gold-band design featuring a subtle geometric pattern that brings a modern and luxurious element to the table. Stack the side plates onto the dinner plates to add a layer of height and emphasize the eye-catching, gold-flecked rims. For a further layer, place the napkins on top and tie them with a ribbon.
By layering plates this way, one can create a wonderful sense of unwrapping the table. The ribbon on the napkin echoes the ribbon of a present. It immediately feels as special as a gift – and as each layer is removed, the one below is accentuated. The geometric pattern of the Gio Gold collection lends itself marvelously to this table-lay style. For a final layer of height (and hen-do brunch joy) deck the Gio Gold two-tier cake stand with macaroons or sweet treats.
Prep Ahead and Use Food As Decoration
For a hen-do brunch, the menu should be all joy and zero stress. That means everyone around the table and no need for anyone to be stuck in the kitchen (unless catered). So, think about dishes that can be prepped ahead and tossed together just before serving. Platters of smoked salmon, smashed avocado and soft-boiled eggs can all be prepped ahead of time. You could even keep toasted sourdough warm in a low oven.
Food can also be used to bring a decorative effect to the table – quails’ eggs always look fantastic. Place them on a platter or tray (a stunning example is this Gio Gold Octagonal Accent Plate) to draw attention to them. Radishes, olives, and crudités are all ideas that serve as delicious pre-hen-do brunch snacks and bring vibrancy to the table, especially when presented in handsome serve ware.
Think about a sweet element too, something that could double up as pudding. Bowls of berries, macaroons, madeleines, financiers, Danish pastries, or cinnamon buns are sure to be met with delight. Serve them on a tiered cake stand such as this one from the Gio Gold collection to create a heightened sense of opulence.
Add A Pop Of Colour
Flowers are a definitive way to bring colour to the table, but for a more personal display, consider choosing a subtle palette of florals and the Wedgwood Magnolia Blossom bud vases. These iconic Wedgwood pieces, long associated with some of the grandest homes and estates, create a fantastic element of ‘bringing the outside in’. The powdery blue also works beautifully with any subtle colour palette. Using a more vibrantly coloured ribbon or napkin would be another way to achieve a colour pop – but we love the idea of using the Wedgwood blue as a nod to ‘something blue’ for the upcoming big day. The Wedgwood selection of bud vases also creates a decorative rhythm to the table – and their petite height means that they don’t block the view across the table between guests! Arranging your flowers this way – as opposed to one large bouquet – is more cost-effective, too. Choose a selection of dusty pinks, whites and creams to echo the Gio Gold china.
Think About Personal Touches
A personal touch from the maid of honour or the bride goes a long way. This can be as simple as handwritten name cards to a homemade herbal tea. Fresh rosemary and cinnamon make for a delicious infusion. Simply place a handful of fresh rosemary sprigs and two cinnamon sticks into your best teapot (we love the Gio Gold teapot), pour over just-boiled water, and let steep for 5-7 minutes. A small gift for the bridesmaids is another thoughtful way to say thank you. It could be a homemade, edible treat, or for something long-lasting, a token from the table for each guest (such as the Gio Gold Octagonal Accent Plate), or a candle. We particularly love the Wedgwood white folia candle which can then be re-used as a tumbler.
