What to Pack for Abu Dhabi

As temperatures begin to soar across the Persian Gulf, our contributing fashion editor Alessandra Frame shows us what to pack in order to look good and keep cool whilst also respecting the local culture.

Whilst Abu Dhabi is known for being more liberal than some of its Middle Eastern neighbours and Western clothing is broadly accepted within the hotels and restaurants, it is always important to respect the culture and religion of the country you’re visiting. Opting for slightly more modest silhouettes than you would on your average holiday won’t affect how stylish you look, but it will mean you feel more comfortable knowing you’re not offending anyone during the trip.

So, what to pack?

A great general rule to follow is to cover your shoulders and knees when leaving the hotel. Try to pack clothing made from light natural fibres that will be breathable in the desert heat, and a good pair of sunglasses will be essential to protect your eyes during the day time. Apart from that you can still dress up and be colourful and express your personal style!

Hot Tip: When visiting religious sites such as the Sheikh Zayed Mosque you will be required to cover up more conservatively. You can wear your own clothes and headscarf or you can buy a traditional abaya from one of the stores at the entrance to the mosque, prices start from 50 dirhams (approx £10).
