A sit down with Emma, Jo Malone London‘s Fragrance & Lifestyle Expert, where she shares her tips on all things scents on your wedding day.
I love working in my industry because…
Our sense of smell is given centre stage. Although it is working tirelessly with every breath it is often under appreciated. Heightening our everyday awareness opens a new window on the world. It is the most emotionally compelling of our senses and it is such a privilege connecting with people through treasured memories suddenly retrieved and letting stories unfold.
I’m best known for…
Rhapsodizingon our fragrance compositions. I love the creative process behind the scents, and the way ingredients are chosen to tell a story in such a multisensorial way. The campaigns are always a flight of fancy whilst grounded in the beauty of everyday scented moments and memories, snapshots we all share. Crunching through bracken and verdant verges to gather the juiciest blackberries, sharp and sweet. Or drifting along the windswept shore, exhilarating crashing waves, the bright mineral scent of ocean spray.
My top three tips for any couple coming to Jo Malone London to find the perfectscent would be…
Come in together to choose your scents, it should be one of the most fun and least stressful decisions, akin to menu sampling, one of the delicious details on the to-do list. Tell us all about the day you are planning so we can find scents that reflect the setting, the season, and tie food, floral and thematic flourishes together. Expert Jo Malone London Stylists’ can suggest Scent Pairings that are truly bespoke to you as a couple. Make sure to try on the different options to find the perfect fit. Afterward, resist wearing your chosen scents until your wedding so they don’t become diluted with other memories. This will ensure they form the most powerful time capsule of your special day.
The podcast I’m listening to is…
Currently Philosophy Bites, but have a long standing appreciation for In Our Time. I am also looking forward to listening to A Conversation in Time, a new series presented by Jo Malone London with GQ. Each episode navigates the important topics of mental health and wellbeing through intimate conversations between special guests about life, identity and experience while looking at the pressures of stereotypes.
My perfect scent is…
Right now it is English Pear & Freesia, the golden crescendo of summer, bottled. Warm light in the long grass, bees humming drowsily, ripening pears and first fallen leaves. The clean dewy floracy of freesia and rose make it perfect throughout the year too.
The current wedding trends I’m loving are…
Friday weddings. We have been to two this year and having the weekend to relive the magic and luxuriate in the details was bliss. Personalised embroidered napkins or Jo Malone London gift boxes embossed with guests’ initials make thoughtful favours and convenient place holders. Lavish floristry and tables flooded with candle light will never grow old.
My favourite place in the world to skip the crowds is…
My garden. We moved house at the beginning of the first UK lockdown so the garden became our focus and sanctuary. It was so exciting to see what emerged out of the ground as the months went by.
My favourite flower is….
I love how the scent of honeysuckle can find you, and accompany you on a walk, the blooms often hidden from view as it entwines through hedgerows. Out of the more ostentatious flowers it has to be a Gertrude Jekyll Rose, by David Austin, for both form and the incredible scent.
And finally, what’s next for Jo Malone London ….
Christmas! By midsummer we are already looking ahead. It is always a dazzling time of year at Jo Malone London and this year promises to be nothing short of stellar.
